This is a classic story, adapted and reimagined in a new way, about human greed, obsession with land, and gullibility. The wealthy peasant Herasym Kalytka dreams of buying up all the surrounding land but catastrophically lacks the money. Wanting to save money and get around the system, he ventures a risky, dishonest deal: he buys 100,000 in counterfeit money from swindlers for 5,000. Instead of the dreamed-of wealth and new land, Kalytka and his crony get bundles of ordinary paper, becoming a victim of his own insatiability.
