The story centers on the successful and somewhat despotic agrobaron Terentii Puzyr, for whom the land and his farm have always been the meaning of life. When the full-scale invasion begins, he categorically refuses to leave his home village despite the threat of occupation. Very quickly his native fields and large agricultural company fall under enemy control, and the territory turns into a temporary military base for the occupiers. Used to being the "master" of his own life and word, Puzyr faces the harsh reality of occupation, where he must undergo a difficult evolution of his views, risk everything, and wage partisan resistance, defending his land, his family, and his people.
