The film is dedicated to a participant in the national liberation war against the Russian invaders, National Hero of Ukraine, volunteer Valerii Krasniak (call sign “Bars”), who began his war in the Donetsk region in 2014 and ended it in the Kharkiv region in 2023, forever inscribing his name in the pantheon of Ukraine’s new heroes. The viewer sees “Bars” from three different angles: how his family remembers him, how he will remain in the memory of his fellow countrymen and friends, and how his comrades-in-arms remember him. These perspectives make it possible to understand the full, many-sided figure of Valerii Krasniak, learn about his outlook and principles, delve into the contradictions of his nature, admire his warrior spirit, and pay full tribute to his heroism. The stories about Bars form a unique collection of living accounts that, wonderfully interwoven, paint the viewer a true portrait of the hero.
Bars
The filmmakers are convinced that hard times pose tough questions not only to each of us individually but also to society as a whole. How did this war happen to us? Where did we go wrong? Which historical lessons did we fail to learn? And what should we even consider history? How do we get out of the sticky web of fabrications and propaganda and touch the true path? The authors of the film suggest starting with the present. After all, real history is not dates and milestones. It is not landmark events and individual figures. History is people. Their lives, their fates: pains and joys, achievements and mistakes. That is real history.
