The story is set in the nineteenth century (1858) in Nizhyn, in the Chernihiv region. The main heroine is Kateryna Verbytska, a serf of Petro Chervinskyi, the wealthiest landowner in the Chernihiv province. Despite her lack of rights, Katia has been raised as a noble young lady: she speaks several foreign languages, plays the piano and paints. Legally, however, she belongs to cruel masters who can dispose of her fate as they see fit. Things become more complicated when the girl falls in love with a noble gentleman, Oleksii Kosach, unaware of the gulf that separates them in the society of the time. The first season begins the heroine's difficult and dramatic struggle for freedom, dignity and true love.
