The action takes place in the 19th century (1858) in Nizhyn, in the Chernihiv region. The main heroine, Kateryna Verbytska, is a serf of the richest landowner in Chernihiv Governorate, Petro Chervinskyi. Despite her powerless status, Katia has been raised as a noble young lady: she knows several foreign languages, plays the piano, and paints. Yet legally she belongs to cruel masters who can dispose of her fate as they please. The situation becomes complicated when the girl falls in love with a noble gentleman, Oleksii Kosach, not knowing about the gulf that separates them in the society of that time. The first season begins the heroine's difficult and dramatic struggle for the right to freedom, dignity, and true love.
