The story centers on museum worker Nina Kosenkova, who lives an almost reclusive life. Her circle consists of the paintings in the museum and a neighbor, Olena Mykolaivna, a once-famous opera singer. Because of her age and almost pathological distrust of those around her, Olena Mykolaivna never leaves her apartment. But it is she and her home that have become a tempting target for "black realtors."
