The action takes place in the Poltava region over several decades. The plot is built as a saga made up of separate stories of people trying to survive, love, work the land, and preserve their human dignity in times of catastrophic historical upheaval. The viewer meets different characters, from prosperous farmers and rebels to ordinary peasants, each making his or her own moral choice in the face of the bloody trials of the century that forever changed the fate of the Ukrainian village.
